Tensions in the Gulf region have escalated after Iran accused the United States of attacking one of its commercial vessels in the Sea of Oman, vowing to respond once the safety of civilians onboard is secured.
A spokesperson for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said Iranian forces were initially prepared to retaliate immediately following the incident but refrained due to the presence of crew members’ families aboard the vessel.
According to the statement, concerns over civilian safety prompted a temporary pause in any military response, as authorities prioritised securing those onboard.
“Iran’s armed forces were ready to act without delay,” the spokesperson noted, “but the presence of non-combatants required restraint to avoid further risk to innocent lives.”

Officials in Iran say efforts are ongoing to ensure the safe evacuation or protection of those on the vessel.
