The member representing Oyi/Ayamelum Federal Constituency in Anambra State, Maureen Gwacham, has clarified a viral video circulating online, saying she was coaxed into seconding a motion she knew nothing about.
The clip, which recently surfaced on social media, showed Gwacham seconding a motion but unable to explain its content when asked by the Speaker, sparking criticism from some users who described her as a “bench warmer.”
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the lawmaker said she was “momentarily caught off guard” during plenary, explaining that she was still settling into her seat when she was called upon.
“I was momentarily caught off guard during the plenary. I was just settling into my seat when Mr Speaker beckoned on me to second the motion moved by Hon. Muktar Tolani Shagaya, an equally cerebral legislator with a reputation for moving credible motions.
“The motion in question seeks the ‘Urgent Need to Provide Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in Government Institutions and Public Buildings Across Nigeria to Prevent Avoidable Loss of Life’,” she said.
Gwacham thanked constituents who reached out with concern and reaffirmed her commitment to her legislative responsibilities.
“My focus remains on delivering for the good people of Oyi/Ayamelum, and I appreciate the continued confidence they have reposed in me,” she added.
Shagaya had moved the motion, which calls for improved emergency medical response infrastructure in public spaces nationwide.
