A 65-year-old man, Musa Gado, is currently in police custody after a DNA test confirmed he fathered the child of his 16-year-old granddaughter, according to the Niger State Child Rights Agency.
The agency’s Director General, Hajiya Kaltume Mohammed, disclosed this to journalists in Minna on Wednesday, describing the case as one of the most serious her office has handled since she assumed the role in November 2025.
The victim’s father, Lawal Nababa, first reported the matter to the agency in October 2025, alleging repeated sexual abuse of his daughter by her maternal grandfather. At the time the complaint was lodged, the teenager was already six months pregnant. She was placed in the agency’s care and subsequently gave birth to a baby boy in December 2025.
Gado initially denied being responsible for the pregnancy, prompting the agency to commission a DNA paternity test conducted at a laboratory outside Nigeria at a cost of ₦500,000. The results returned a 99.9999% positive match, confirming Gado as the biological father of the child.
Mohammed noted that Gado had also made several unsuccessful attempts to terminate the pregnancy before the matter was reported.
The teenager, whose parents are both living, had been in the care of her maternal grandmother since childhood.
The Director General confirmed that Gado will be charged to court once police complete their investigation. She also revealed that the agency is currently handling six similar cases of child sexual abuse in the state, including one involving a father allegedly abusing his biological daughter.
“Child molestation and rape is alarming in the state,” Mohammed warned, urging communities to speak up and report such abuses promptly.
