As Nigeria’s creator economy continues to expand, questions around artist development, ownership, and sustainability are becoming increasingly important. While much of the industry still revolves around distribution and visibility, new models are beginning to emerge that focus on structure, transparency, and long-term growth.
One such model is Discovery Community.
Following its initial rollout in Lagos, the platform recently expanded into Zaria, Kaduna State, with the release of Discovery Community Vol. 2 – The Green EP. The project marks the next phase of an initiative designed to discover, develop, and position independent artists within a more structured ecosystem.
Originally introduced as a platform to support emerging African talent, Discovery Community has since evolved into a broader framework that combines music creation, education, and technology (Read more on Nggossips).
A Different Approach to Artist Development
At the heart of Discovery Community is a shift away from traditional release models.
Rather than focusing solely on singles or projects, the platform operates through a structured incubation process. Artists are brought together in a three-day recording camp, where they collaborate to create original music. This is followed by a series of educational sessions, including a masterclass on royalty structures and digital monetization.
The goal is not only to produce music but to equip artists with a deeper understanding of how value is created and distributed within the industry.
As reflected in the Discovery Community framework , this combination of creation, education, and distribution forms a pipeline that supports artists beyond a single release cycle.
“We’re not just releasing music, we’re building a system that allows artists to participate more fairly in the value they create,” said Oluwaseyi Ladele, founder of Discovery Community.
Integrating Technology into the Creative Process
A key component of the model is its use of blockchain-based systems to manage royalty splits.
Through its collaboration with Revelator Labs, Discovery Community enables transparent and automated distribution of earnings among all contributors. This approach addresses longstanding challenges around ownership and compensation, particularly in collaborative environments. Rather than being introduced as an add-on, this technology is embedded into the process from the outset.
The Green EP and a Focus on Sustainability
With Vol. 2, Discovery Community introduces sustainability as a central theme.
The Green EP was recorded using energy-efficient processes, reflecting a growing awareness of environmental impact within the creative sector. While sustainability is still an emerging conversation in the Nigerian music industry, initiatives like this suggest a shift toward more responsible production practices.
Expanding Beyond Lagos
The decision to move from Lagos to Zaria represents a deliberate effort to decentralize access within the industry. For many artists, opportunities remain concentrated in major cities. By activating different regions, Discovery Community is working to identify and support talent outside traditional hubs, while building a broader network of creatives across the country. This approach aligns with wider trends in the creator economy, where access and participation are becoming more distributed.
Driving Visibility Through Strategic Partnerships
To support the release, Discovery Community has partnered with key media platforms, including Trace TV, to extend its reach beyond digital streaming.
The focus track, Sweet Melodies, serves as the lead single from the EP and is supported by a coordinated rollout across broadcast and online platforms.
Looking Ahead
With two volumes completed, Discovery Community is positioning itself as a scalable model for artist development in Nigeria.
The platform aims to expand into additional regions, while continuing to refine its approach to music creation, education, and distribution. In doing so, it offers a practical example of how the creator economy can evolve to support not just output, but long-term participation.
