Four members of the House of Representatives from Kano State have defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), in a move that underscores shifting political alignments within Nigeria’s lower legislative chamber.
The lawmakers involved are Sani Adamu Wakil, representing Minjibir/Ungogo; Umar Mukhtar Zakari, representing Tarauni; Yusuf Umar Datti, representing Kura/Madobi/Garun Mallam; and Abdulhakeem Kamilo Ado, representing Wudil/Garko Federal Constituency.
Speaking on their decision, the lawmakers cited persistent internal crises within the NNPP as a major factor behind their defection.
“The level of internal discord within our former party has made it increasingly difficult to provide effective leadership and uphold democratic principles,” one of the defectors said.
They added that the ongoing disputes had weakened the party’s structure and hindered its ability to meet the expectations of constituents.
The defection marks a notable development in the House of Representatives, reflecting broader political recalibrations as lawmakers continue to reassess their affiliations ahead of future electoral contests.
Political observers say the move could further alter the balance of power within the chamber, as the ADC seeks to strengthen its foothold at the national level.
