There exist opportunities not only for highly skilled professionals but also for low-skilled and entry-level workers willing to take up physically demanding jobs in agriculture, hospitality, and regional industries.

Despite Australia’s strict immigration system, a growing labour shortage in certain sectors has created limited but legitimate pathways for foreign workers with minimal formal qualifications.

These opportunities are largely driven by seasonal demand, an ageing population, and the need to support rural and regional economies.

NgGossips shares details of entry-level job openings that Kenyans looking to seek greener pastures in Australia can apply for.

1. Agriculture

According to Anthony Wambugu, a migration consultant at VisaXpats, agriculture remains the most accessible pathway for low-skilled foreign workers.

“Seasonal farm jobs such as fruit picking, vegetable harvesting, vineyard work, and packhouse sorting are in high demand across states like Queensland, Victoria, and New South Wales,” he shared.

These roles are often filled through structured programmes such as the Seasonal Worker Programme (SWP) and the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme, which allow employers to recruit foreign labour when local workers are unavailable.

Agriculture continues to dominate because it requires minimal formal training but high levels of reliability and physical endurance.

“Most Kenyan applicants underestimate farm work,” Wambugu explains. “It is demanding, but it is also one of the most realistic entry points because employers struggle to find local workers willing to do it consistently.”

He adds that applicants who demonstrate discipline, basic communication skills, and a willingness to work in rural areas often stand a better chance of being selected.

2. Hospitality and tourism jobs

Another major entry point is the hospitality industry, which includes hotels, restaurants, cafes, and resorts.

Jobs such as kitchen assistants, cleaners, housekeeping staff, and waiters are regularly available, especially in tourist-heavy regions.

While these roles may appear more accessible, Wambugu cautions that competition is stiff and employers prioritise candidates who can quickly adapt.

“Hospitality jobs require soft skills; communication, teamwork, and customer service,” says Wambugu. “Even without formal qualifications, your attitude and ability to interact with people can determine whether you secure or lose an opportunity.”

3. Construction

Beyond farms and hotels, Australia’s construction industry continues to grow, with multiple construction projects running simultaneously.

This construction boom and expanding logistics sector have created demand for entry-level general labourers as construction assistants, cleaners, warehouse operatives, and packaging workers.

For international workers, jobs in the construction industry offer a stable income, exposure to large-scale projects, and a pathway toward more advanced roles.

4. Cleaning jobs

In 2026, construction site cleaner jobs have become a lifeline for immigrants seeking entry-level opportunities that require minimal experience.

This is because companies must maintain strict safety and cleanliness standards for ongoing infrastructure, residential, and commercial projects across the country.

Given that debris, waste materials, and unused equipment are health hazards if not properly managed, there is a need for dedicated cleaning staff.

Construction site cleaners play a key role in ensuring that projects remain efficient, organised, and compliant with workplace regulations.

5. Warehouse work

The demand for jobs in Australia’s warehousing industry is high due to a robust logistics sector, with salaries ranging from $50,000 (KSh 6.4 million) and $60,000 (KSh 7.7 million) per year.

Common roles include pick-packers, forklift drivers, and inventory officers, with many opportunities available as casual, part-time, and full-time employment.

Key hubs are experiencing labour shortages, leading to increased recruitment efforts.

These roles are particularly attractive to younger migrants due to their flexibility and the possibility of gaining experience that can later lead to more stable employment opportunities.

Visa pathways

However, not all these roles are available because companies must maintain strict safety and cleanliness standards for accessibility through direct recruitment from abroad.

Wambugu notes that many Kenyans make the mistake of applying blindly online without understanding visa limitations.

“There is no open visa for ‘any job’ in Australia,” he explains. “You must align the job with a valid visa pathway. That is where most applicants go wrong; they find a job but have no legal way to take it up.”

For Kenyan applicants, there is no direct “low-skilled work visa” for Australia. Instead, access is usually through specific visa categories tied to employment conditions.

Common pathways include Working Holiday visas (where eligible), employer-sponsored visas, and seasonal labour programmes.

Wambugu emphasises the importance of using approved and verified channels.

“Avoid shortcuts,” he warns. “If a recruiter promises guaranteed jobs without a proper visa process, that is a red flag. Genuine opportunities always follow a structured immigration process.”

He also advises prospective applicants to invest in improving their English proficiency and documentation readiness, as these can significantly improve success rates.

Challenges and reality check

While opportunities exist, migration experts caution that the journey is far from easy. Many roles are temporary, physically demanding, and located in remote areas.

Wambugu stresses that mindset is just as important as opportunity.

“Going to Australia for low-skilled work is not a luxury move, it is a sacrifice,” he says. “Those who succeed are the ones who are mentally prepared for tough conditions and long hours.”

There is also the challenge of misinformation, particularly on social media, where misleading job offers often circulate.

A window of opportunity

Despite these challenges, the demand for foreign labour in agriculture and hospitality continues to create opportunities for hardworking individuals from countries like Kenya.

For many, these roles serve as a stepping stone, offering international work experience, income stability, and exposure to global labour markets.

As Australia continues to face workforce shortages in key industries, the door, though narrow, remains open. And as Anthony Wambugu puts it:

Scholarship opportunities in Australia

Apart from employment, the Australian government, through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, recently announced scholarship opportunities for foreigners.

The programme aims to support the development needs of Australia’s partner countries, such as Kenya and other countries in Africa, Asia, and the Pacific region.

Australia said successful applicants from developing nations will undertake full-time undergraduate or postgraduate studies at participating Australian universities and Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutions.

Beneficiaries will be required to leave Australia at least two years after completing their studies; failure to which the scholar will be required to repay the full cost of the award.
