The Delta State Police Command has initiated disciplinary action against two officers following a viral video showing alleged extortion of a motorist within a police station in Asaba.
The incident, which occurred on January 13, 2026, drew public outrage after footage surfaced showing officers using a point-of-sale machine to collect money from a civilian inside ‘C’ Division.
In response, the Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, ordered an orderly room trial for the officers involved, describing the act as a serious breach of professional conduct.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, the action violates the standing directive of the Inspector-General of Police, which prohibits the use of POS machines or any electronic payment platforms within police facilities.
The officers identified as Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim are currently facing internal disciplinary proceedings. The Command has assured that the outcome of the trial will be made public.

The Commissioner of Police stated that no officer has the authority to demand or collect money from citizens under any guise, stressing that such conduct undermines public trust and the integrity of the force.
He described the incident as unacceptable and warned that the action taken would serve as a deterrent to other personnel.
Oyeniyi further reminded officers of their duty to act within the law and to treat members of the public with respect and professionalism at all times.
The Command commended members of the public who brought the incident to light and encouraged citizens to continue reporting cases of misconduct through official complaint channels.
It reaffirmed its commitment to discipline, accountability, and the restoration of public confidence in policing across the state.
