The Supreme Court of Nigeria has adjourned proceedings in the long-running dispute over the Kano Emirate, pushing the matter to April 19, 2027.
Politics Nigeria reports that the decision was announced on Monday after the court held its first hearing on the case.
The Kano emirate centres on the disputed leadership between Muhammadu Sanusi II (reinstated by the State Government) and Aminu Ado Bayero (deposed in 2024).
The conflict involves conflicting court orders, resulting in a stalemate with two rival claimants to the throne and potential resolution pending currently at the Supreme Court.
Parties involved in the legal battle appeared before the apex court and presented their preliminary arguments.
After listening to submissions, the court fixed a new date for continuation of the case. The adjournment means the matter will remain unresolved for another year.
The dispute over the Kano Emirate has been on for some time. It follows a series of legal and political developments surrounding the traditional leadership structure in Kano.
At the hearing, lawyers representing the different parties outlined their positions. They urged the court to consider key constitutional and administrative issues tied to the emirate system.
