BREAKING: Oborevwori presents staff of office to Ohworode of Olomu, as monarch seeks power, hospital for kingdom

THE Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori on Friday, presented Staff of Office to HRM Albert Akpomudje, SAN, FCIArb, Eyanvwie-Alaka I, the 14th Ohworode of Olomu Kingdom, Ughelli South Local Government Area of the state.

The ceremony, attended by legal luminaries, traditional rulers, political leaders and captains of industry, was performed on behalf of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori by his deputy, Monday Onyeme.

Speaking at the event, the Deputy Governor of the State Sir Monday Onyeme conveyed the Governor’s goodwill and solidarity to the people of Olomu, describing the occasion as a critical bridge between government and traditional institutions.

“This occasion is both symbolic and significant. It represents the vital link between government and traditional institutions, a partnership that remains central to peace, stability and development across our state,” Onyeme said.

He commended the peaceful and orderly succession process that produced the monarch, assuring that the state government would continue to work closely with traditional rulers to deliver development.

“We will continue to partner with traditional institutions to ensure inclusive development. Our MORE Agenda is designed to ensure that no community is left behind,” he added.

In his acceptance speech, Akpomudje expressed profound gratitude to God and the state government, noting that the presentation of the Staff of Office had formally sealed his ascension to the throne.

“By this singular act, I have officially ascended the prestigious throne with the seal of authority symbolised through the presentation of the Staff of Office as the duly prescribed traditional ruler of Olomu Kingdom,” he said.

The monarch traced his journey to the throne, explaining that the Olomu traditional leadership follows a structured rotational system among three ruling houses — Uhurie, Imoghoro and Eyavwie — as backed by law.

He noted that his emergence followed a seamless and peaceful process rooted in tradition and legal provisions, describing it as “a journey ordained by destiny.”

Beyond the celebration, the event highlighted pressing challenges facing the kingdom, with the monarch making a passionate appeal to the state government for urgent intervention.

Top on his list was the restoration of electricity to several communities that have been in darkness for years. “We earnestly appeal for the reconnection of electricity to our communities. 

“The prolonged absence of power has significantly affected economic activities and the well-being of our people,” he said.

Akpomudje also decried the absence of a government hospital in the kingdom, describing the situation as dire.

“It is deeply concerning that there is no government hospital in the entire Olomu Kingdom. We respectfully request the establishment of at least one standard government hospital to cater to the healthcare needs of our people,” he added.

On security and justice, the monarch called for the establishment of a police station and a functional High Court, noting that existing structures are inadequate.

“The establishment of a police station is long overdue… to ensure the safety and security of lives and property,” he said.

He further appealed for the establishment of a higher institution in the kingdom to address youth development and reduce migration.

Despite the challenges, Akpomudje reaffirmed his commitment to peace, unity and collaboration with the state government.

“My foremost priority is to sustain and strengthen peaceful coexistence within the kingdom and with our neighbours,” he pledged.

The monarch also appreciated the state government for appointing sons and daughters of Olomu into key positions and awarding contracts, describing it as a sign of inclusion.

The ceremony drew dignitaries from across the country, including members of the judiciary, with special recognition given to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, as well as justices of the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal.

For many residents, the event was more than a royal ritual — it was a moment of hope.

“This is not just about a crown; it is about development. We believe our new king will bring government closer to the people,” said a community member who attended the ceremony.

As drums faded and dignitaries departed, expectations remain high that the new monarch’s reign will usher in both cultural pride and long-awaited development for Olomu Kingdom.
