According to a report by Daily Trust on Monday, April 27, 2026, ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the last election, Mr Peter Obi, alongside several political and regional leaders from the South East, held a closed-door meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja.….......
The meeting took place on Monday evening at Jonathan’s private residence and lasted for several hours, with discussions centred on national politics, governance direction, and expectations ahead of the next electoral cycle.
The engagement was not publicly announced in advance and only became known after details were shared following the meeting.
The South East delegation included notable political figures such as former Enugu State governor Dr Okwesilieze Nwodo, former Imo State governor Achike Udenwa, former Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission Chief Onyema Ugochukwu, Senator Victor Umeh, and other senior political stakeholders from the region.
The group was led by Peter Obi, who has already expressed interest in contesting the 2027 presidential election under the platform of the African Democratic Congress.
The meeting was described as part of a wider consultation process involving key national figures across different regions and political backgrounds.
After the closed-door discussions, Peter Obi addressed journalists on behalf of the delegation.
He explained that the purpose of the visit was to consult with the former president on matters relating to the upcoming general elections.

He noted that the delegation found it necessary to engage with Jonathan due to his experience as a former head of state and his involvement in Nigeria’s democratic development.

Obi further stated that former President Goodluck Jonathan expressed concern for the country’s political direction and emphasized the importance of conducting free, fair, and credible elections in 2027.

According to Obi, the former president also reiterated his belief in peaceful political competition and the need for all political actors to act in the interest of national development.
