Community leaders invoke ancestral curses as Nigeria grapples with a dangerous new wave of synthetic cannabinoids linked to rising mental health crises.
OGUEDION, OGAMESON COMMUNITY – In a dramatic show of force rooted in ancient tradition, the elders of the Ogbesomwan community in Edo State have invoked ancestral curses against individuals involved in selling Colos and other dangerous synthetic drugs within their domain.
The ritual, performed at the community’s sacred Oguedion (Elders’ council) grounds, represents an escalation in local efforts to combat a drug epidemic that traditional leaders say is destroying the fabric of our youth population.
The move comes as authorities report staggering figures: the Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) arrested 462 suspected drug traffickers in 2025 alone 309 males and 153 females while seizing over 207,000 kilograms of illicit substances .
The curse ritual, witnessed by community members and kindred representatives, involved traditional incantations, libations poured to the gods of the land, and the summoning of ancestral spirits as witnesses. The elders declared that any person selling Colos, Ice, or other synthetic drugs within the community would face supernatural consequences including the ground rejecting their footsteps and the sun and moon smiting them.
A community source who spoke on condition of anonymity said the decision was reached after repeated appeals to law enforcement yielded limited results. “We have watched our sons and daughters lose their minds. Young men who once worked are now wandering aimlessly, speaking to ghosts. The elders had no choice but to act, the source said.
Colos short for Colorado has emerged as one of Nigeria’s most alarming drug threats. Unlike traditional cannabis, Colos is a synthetic cocktail typically combining cannabis strains with dangerous additives including codeine syrup, pharmaceutical opioids like Tramadol, and various toxic chemicals.
