According to a report by Punch on Sunday, April 12, 2026, the Borno State Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri is currently experiencing a shortage of blood supplies following the admission of multiple civilian victims affected by a recent military air operation in parts of northern Borno State.
The situation developed after injured persons were rushed to the hospital from communities impacted by an airstrike that reportedly took place around a weekly market area in the region.
Medical personnel have been working to stabilise patients while also managing limited resources needed for emergency treatment, including blood transfusion for those with severe injuries.
The incident is linked to a military air operation conducted in areas between Gubio and Geidam Local Government boundaries, where a market gathering was reportedly ongoing at the time of the strike.
According to available reports, the operation took place on Saturday evening and affected a busy trading location known for attracting residents from surrounding villages.
The timing of the strike contributed to confusion and panic among traders and community members, many of whom were engaged in routine economic activities when the explosions were heard.
The Nigerian Air Force, through its Air Component under Operation HADIN KAI, carried out the strike on April 11, 2026, in coordination with ground forces.
The operation was part of ongoing counter-insurgency efforts in the North-East aimed at targeting armed groups linked to Boko Haram.
Military authorities stated that the action followed earlier intelligence-based operations that identified suspected insurgent positions in the area.
However, the aftermath of the operation has raised concerns due to reports of civilian casualties and injuries among market attendees.
At the Borno State Specialist Hospital, medical staff confirmed that a total of 21 injured persons were admitted following the incident.
The Medical Director, Dr Shehu Muhammad, stated that the victims include 16 males and five females who were brought in with varying degrees of injuries.
He explained that the hospital received cases involving both blast-related injuries and gunshot wounds, with some patients requiring immediate emergency care upon arrival.
The medical team has been attending to the patients while also seeking additional support to manage the rising demand for blood and other critical medical supplies.
The shortage of blood has become a pressing issue due to the number of patients requiring transfusion and urgent surgical procedures.
Hospital officials noted that the demand for blood has increased beyond available reserves, prompting appeals for voluntary donations from residents and health organisations.
Medical personnel have also been prioritising critical cases, particularly those with severe blood loss, while stabilising others who sustained less life-threatening injuries.
The situation has placed additional pressure on healthcare workers who are already managing routine medical cases alongside emergency admissions.
The affected communities between Gubio and Geidam continue to assess the impact of the incident as families search for missing relatives and provide support for those receiving treatment in medical facilities.
Markets in the area, which normally serve as key centres for trade and social interaction, were disrupted following the incident, affecting daily economic activities.
The broader North-East region has remained a focus of military operations for several years due to ongoing security challenges, with efforts aimed at reducing insurgent activities while maintaining stability in civilian areas.
He said, “Today, we received about 21 victims of a bomb blast as well as gunshot wounds from the town between Gubio and Geidam.”
