Troops of the Nigerian Army have dismantled a major camp belonging to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), in Imo State, recovering what are believed to be the remains of two personnel killed four years ago.

The operation took place on Friday, 24 April 2026, along the Ubaha-Orsu axis in Orsu Local Government Area. It was part of ongoing clearance efforts targeting criminal hideouts in the South East.

Acting on credible intelligence, troops of 82 Division, supported by other security agencies, advanced on the suspected IPOB/ESN stronghold. They came under heavy gunfire from armed elements but responded decisively, repelling multiple ambushes and forcing the attackers to flee.

A thorough search of the dismantled camp led to the discovery of shallow graves. Troops carefully excavated the site and recovered suspected human remains believed to be those of Master Warrant Officer Linus Musa Audu and Private Gloria Mathew.

The two personnel were abducted and brutally murdered in May 2022 while travelling for their traditional wedding.

“The recovered remains have been secured and will undergo detailed forensic analysis, including DNA testing, to confirm their identities,” a statement at the weekend reads.

The Army said it is already working with the families of the deceased to ensure proper identification and arrange befitting burials with full military honours.

This latest success, according to the military, demonstrates the continued degradation of IPOB/ESN networks and infrastructure in the region.

“The discovery of shallow graves inside their camp further exposes the group’s heinous atrocities and complete disregard for human life,” it added.

The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to justice for its fallen personnel.

“We remain resolute in ensuring that justice is served for our heroes who paid the supreme price,” the statement noted. “Operations will continue until all criminal elements are neutralised and lasting peace is restored to the South East.”

The Army commended law-abiding citizens for their support through timely intelligence and urged them to remain vigilant and continue providing credible information to security agencies.

It reiterated that it “remains professional and fully committed to defending the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Nigeria.”

The remains are currently in safe custody pending forensic confirmation.
