New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez joked that it might be better for President Donald Trump to be out on the golf course right now than in the Oval Office.
The progressive was being interviewed by MeidasTouch reporter Pablo Manriquez on Capitol Hill Monday when she was asked about Trump’s “work ethic,” given the delicate state of play in the Iran war.
She answered: “Obviously, it’s awful that this guy is playing golf, but, in a way, we’re already seeing that some of the most important military decision-makers in the country are trying to keep him out of consequential decisions.
“So in some ways, you kind of want this guy on a golf course more than you want him in the Oval Office.
“But that also calls into question the 25th Amendment, because if he is being… if the determination is that Donald Trump cannot be trusted in the Situation Room in unfolding scenarios then he’s not fit to be president.”
The congresswoman was referring to a Wall Street Journal report published Saturday alleging that the president had been excluded from a military briefing about the daring rescue mission to retrieve two U.S. airmen downed in Iran earlier this month because of his erratic temperament.
The newspaper described Trump engaging in an hours-long tantrum, raging that a failed rescue could mean the end of his presidency, citing the Iran hostage crisis of 1979 as a haunting precedent.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt responded to that story by saying that the president had “remained a steady leader our country needs.”
“President Trump campaigned proudly on his promise to deny the Iranian regime the ability to develop a nuclear weapon, which is what this noble operation accomplishes,” she added.
Ocasio-Cortez’s fellow New York Democrat, Rep. Daniel Goldman, responded to the WSJ’s report by writing on X (Twitter): “Trump is not well. We need the 25th Amendment before something really bad happens on U.S. soil.”
However, MS NOW pundit Jen Psaki has cautioned Democrats against routinely demanding that the amendment be invoked to try to get Trump removed from office on mental health grounds.
Speaking to Stephen A Smith, the former press secretary to Joe Biden said: “I have no issue with people saying they’re for invoking the 25th Amendment, but it’s not going to happen. So, it’s like, why are we spending so much time, you know?”
The amendment would require the support of Vice President JD Vance and a majority of the cabinet, an extremely unlikely proposition given their outspoken loyalty to the commander in chief.
That did not stop 50 House Democrats tabling a bill to that effect last week.
Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin saying: “Public trust in Donald Trump’s ability to meet the duties of his office has dropped to unprecedented lows as he threatens to destroy entire civilizations, unleashes chaos in the Middle East while violating Congressional war powers, aggressively insults the Pope of the Catholic Church and sends out artistic renderings online likening himself to Jesus Christ.
“We are at a dangerous precipice, and it is now a matter of national security for Congress to fulfill its responsibilities under the 25th Amendment to protect the American people from an increasingly volatile and unstable situation.”
Earlier on in the conflict, AOC accused the president of “impulsively” waging Operation Epic Fury as a distraction from the scandal surrounding Jeffrey Epstein and the Department of Justice’s chaotic release of its files on the late pedophile financier.
