The Action Democratic Party on Wednesday said it will adopt consensus-based primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections, as part of efforts to strengthen internal unity and improve its chances at the polls.
The decision was announced at the party’s National Executive Committee meeting held at its national secretariat in Abuja.
Speaking at the meeting, the National Chairman of the party, Yabagi Sani, said the move was in line with the Electoral Act 2026 and the guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Sani said the party would ensure transparent processes in selecting candidates who are credible and electable.
He said, “As we look ahead to the 2027 General Elections, we must be guided by the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 and the regulations of the Independent National Electoral Commission. Our approach is clear, lawful, and strategic.
“We shall conduct consensus-based primaries, in full compliance with the law. We shall ensure that our processes are transparent and present candidates who are credible, competent, and electable.
“We are not just preparing to participate in elections, we are preparing to win responsibly and govern effectively.”
The former national chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council also warned party members against internal division and indiscipline, saying unity would be key to the party’s success.
“As we approach critical milestones—our national convention, primaries, and eventual campaigns—we must conduct ourselves with discipline, mutual respect, and loyalty to the party.
“There is no room for division. There is no room for indiscipline. The interest of the party must always supersede individual ambition,” he stated.
Continuing, Sani said the party had been repositioning itself to become a stronger political force, adding that it had expanded its membership and digitised its internal processes.
The politician highlighted that the ADP is steadily emerging as the credible alternative “that Nigerians have been waiting for.”
“Nigeria today faces significant challenges—economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, and declining public trust in governance. We believe Nigeria can work—and we are prepared to make it work.
“Over the past months, we have taken deliberate steps to reposition our party as a credible, disciplined, and forward-looking political platform.
We have strengthened our internal structures, expanded our membership base across all states and wards, and commenced the digitization of our processes through our online portal, ensuring transparency, accessibility, and inclusiveness,” he added.
The party said it would intensify preparations for its national convention, primaries and campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections.
