The Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, has assured aspirants of the All Progressives Congress of a transparent and credible candidate selection process ahead of the general elections.
Uzodimma gave the assurance during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the party secretariat in Owerri, according to a statement issued by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Onwuasoanya FCC Jones, on Monday.
He said the party would uphold the highest standards of internal democracy and fair competition, urging aspirants to remain loyal and disciplined.
“The party shall uphold the highest standards of internal democracy and fair competition,” the governor said, while encouraging aspirants to be sportsmanlike and continue supporting the party regardless of the outcome of the primaries.
Uzodimma noted that the large number of aspirants reflected the growing popularity and acceptance of the APC in the state, which he attributed to what he described as people-oriented policies and programmes.
He commended party members, including National Assembly lawmakers, state legislators, and party officials, for their continued support, adding that the APC had consolidated its position in the state.
The governor also praised the state chairman of the party, Austin Onyedebelu, and members of the State Executive Committee for their leadership following the recent party congresses.
He further disclosed plans to construct a larger state secretariat for the party, directing the chairman to seek land allocation from the Ministry of Lands.
In his remarks, Onyedebelu thanked the governor for his support and described his leadership as instrumental to the party’s growing influence in the state.
The meeting was attended by key stakeholders, including members of the National Assembly, former deputy governors, top government officials, party leaders, and aspirants.
Internal party democracy has remained a major issue in Nigeria’s electoral process, with disputes over candidate selection often leading to internal crises and defections.
Political parties, including the All Progressives Congress, have faced criticism in the past over the use of consensus arrangements and allegations of the imposition of candidates.
As preparations for the next general elections intensify, party leaders have increasingly emphasised transparent primaries and inclusive processes to strengthen internal cohesion and improve electoral chances.
