Sunderland have strongly condemned racist abuse directed at forward Brian Brobbey following their 1-0 Premier League win over Tottenham Hotspur, describing the incident as part of a disturbing and recurring trend.
The club confirmed that the abuse, which occurred on social media after Sunday’s match, has been reported to league authorities, platforms, and the police.
Sunderland demanded swift action against those responsible, reiterating their zero-tolerance stance on racism.
In an official statement, the club expressed full support for Brobbey, stressing that recent cases involving teammates Romaine Mundle and Lutsharel Geertruida show the issue is becoming increasingly frequent both online and in stadiums.
The Premier League also condemned the abuse, vowing to work with law enforcement and social media companies to ensure offenders face severe consequences, including bans, criminal records, and possible jail terms.

The incident follows a tense moment during the match at the Stadium of Light, where Brobbey was involved in a collision that led to an injury for Tottenham defender Cristian Romero, who left the pitch visibly distressed.
Authorities, including the UK Football Policing Unit, are already investigating a surge in similar cases.
Anti-discrimination group Kick It Out reports that online abuse incidents have hit record levels, rising sharply compared to last season.
Sunderland reaffirmed its stance, declaring that football must remain a safe, inclusive environment for all, and pledged to continue calling out racism “clearly and unapologetically.”
