His goal against Girona makes it back-to-back strikes, but beyond the numbers lies a more compelling narrative: sharpness, confidence, and consistency

There are moments late in a season when survival becomes more than a target; it becomes an identity. On a tense Saturday night at the Mestalla, Sadiq Umar embodied that urgency, taking Valencia CF a step further from danger with a decisive goal in a hard-fought 2-1 win over Girona FC.

Having found the net in last week’s draw at Mallorca, Sadiq retained his place in the starting XI, a vote of confidence from manager Carlos Corberan. It was a decision rooted in necessity as much as belief; Valencia needed goals, and Sadiq was beginning to look like a man rediscovering his rhythm.

From kickoff, Los Che imposed themselves. They controlled possession, dictated tempo, and carved out the better chances. In the 19th minute, Sadiq offered a glimpse of what was to come, latching onto a pass inside the box before firing narrowly wide. It was a miss, but more importantly, it was a warning.

He was sharp, mobile, and constantly probing, a forward playing with hunger. Yet, as has often been the case this season, Valencia’s dominance did not translate into cutting-edge efficiency. The first half drifted to a goalless close, tension simmering beneath the surface.

Valencia emerged from the restart with renewed intent, and this time, the breakthrough followed. Just five minutes into the second half, Largie Ramazani combined neatly with Javi Guerra before drilling a low finish past Paulo Gazzaniga to ignite the Mestalla.

But the night belonged to Sadiq.

Nine minutes later, the Nigerian striker delivered a moment that underlined both instinct and intelligence. Meeting a cross from José Gayà, he powered home a header, but the finish only told half the story. His movement in the buildup was elite: a deceptive run that disoriented defenders, followed by sheer physical determination to win his duel under pressure.

It was the kind of goal that strikers build reputations on, equal parts craft and combat.

Valencia’s cushion, however, proved fragile. In the 63rd minute, Girona clawed their way back through Joel Roca, reigniting the contest and setting up a nervy finale.

Sadiq’s shift ended shortly after, as he was replaced by Hugo Duro in the 71st minute. By then, his job was done, or at least, his imprint was firmly stamped on the game.

What followed was a frantic closing stretch, with chances at both ends and tension thick in the air. But Valencia held on. When the final whistle sounded, it confirmed more than just three points; it marked a significant stride in their survival bid.

The victory lifts Valencia to 11th on the table with 39 points from 33 games, offering breathing space in a season that has often felt suffocating.

For Sadiq Umar, this is bigger than club survival; it is a personal resurgence unfolding at the perfect time.

His goal against Girona makes it back-to-back strikes, but beyond the numbers lies a more compelling narrative: sharpness, confidence, and consistency. He is no longer just scoring; he is influencing games.

And somewhere, Eric Chelle will be watching.

With international fixtures against Poland and Portugal on the horizon, and the Unity Cup also set for London, squad decisions are approaching. These games offer Chelle a critical window to assess his attacking options, particularly in a pool where form has been inconsistent.

Sadiq’s timing could not be better.

While competitors like Cyriel Dessers and Tolu Arokodare have struggled for regular minutes, Sadiq is building momentum. He is playing, scoring, and, perhaps most importantly, looking like a striker reborn.

For now, his focus remains clear: keep Valencia in the top flight. Survival is the mission, and every goal edges them closer.

But beyond that lies another ambition, one shaped by green and white. If he sustains this run through the final stretch of the season, Sadiq Umar will not just be knocking on the Super Eagles’ door.

He will be demanding that it be opened.
