A retired judge from Meerut, India, has set an example for many parents in a society where divorce is often considered shameful and deeply saddening.

Judge Gyanendra Kumar Sharma held a colourful ceremony to mark the end of his only daughter’s eight-year marriage.

Pranita Vashistha was married to an army major on December 18, 2018. However, their union was allegedly marked by conflict and various disputes.

She reportedly suffered mental, physical, and emotional distress during the years she lived with her husband, even after welcoming their first child.

Feeling overwhelmed, she filed for divorce, which was finally granted by Principal Judge Shaktiputra Tomar.

How did Pranita’s family celebrate her divorce?

Following the dissolution of her marriage, Pranita’s family, led by her father, the retired judge, showed up with drums, garlands, sweets, and celebratory music.

They danced and rejoiced as they escorted her home in a festive procession, bringing out a warm and beautiful homecoming.

Her family and extended relatives wore matching T-shirts bearing the words, ‘I love my daughter, my heart, my soul’, while she wore one that read, ‘My family, my life’.

All the T-shirts had her image printed on them, showing just how deeply loved and supported she was by her family.

Sharma noted that his daughter’s happiness was his top priority, and that upholding her dignity over societal expectations was also his duty, hence the controversial yet deeply meaningful celebration.

“If my daughter is not happy in marriage, it is my duty to bring her out of that environment. We did not seek alimony or anything else. I just brought my daughter back,” Dr Sharma told the media.

What did Pranita say at the divorce party?

Pranita, a finance director at Pranav Vashistha Judicial Academy in Tejgarhi, is the only child of her parents after her brother, Pranav Vashistha, died in an accident in Chandigarh in 2022.

Speaking during the celebration, the mother of one said she had become mentally fragile during the marriage.

She noted that her family’s unwavering support in helping her rebuild her life was the only thing that kept her going.

Pranita also called on women in abusive marriages not to remain silent, but to stand up for themselves without worrying about what society would say.

“Become strong, educate yourself, and be independent before thinking about marriage,” she said.

Mombasa dad celebrates daughter
