President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Taiwo Oyedele as the new Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, replacing Wale Edun in a fresh cabinet reshuffle. According to the statement, Oyedele, who previously served as ... Minister of State for Finance, has now been elevated to take over the leadership of the ministry, while Edun has been directed to hand over.
Wale Edun’s statement after sack by Tinubu
In a statement marking the end of his service, Edun expressed gratitude to the president for the opportunity to serve in his cabinet since May 2023.
He noted that his involvement in the administration began as head of the Presidential Transition Committee, after which he served as Special Adviser on Monetary Policy before he was appointed a minister.
Edun stated that the administration inherited significant economic challenges but had since implemented reforms aimed at stabilising the economy and driving long-term growth.
“We have worked collectively across government to advance critical reforms that stabilised the macroeconomic environment, strengthened fiscal sustainability, and laid the foundation for inclusive and long-term growth,” he said.
The presidency said all handover processes are expected to be concluded on or before April 23 (today), with interim arrangements put in place to ensure continuity.
Oyedele’s role in the formulation of Nigeria’s tax law act
Until President Tinubu nominated him as a minister, Oyedele from Ikare, Akoko, Ondo State, was the chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, which overhauled Nigeria’s tax system.
Oyedele, 50, is an economist, accountant and public policy expert.

Early Life and Family Background
Taiwo Oyedele was born in Ikare-Akoko, Ondo State, in 1975. His father was a retired school headmaster who was openly generous to friends and neighbours, a development that eventually impoverished his family.
According to Jaraushub.com, Taiwo narrated how his father used to be one of the few men in his village who had a television (black and white), and their house became the Mecca, especially during TV dramas. However, the moment was short-lived.
