A police inspector has been seriously injured following a road accident involving a Mack truck and a Toyota Sienna bus along the Murtala Mohammed Highway in Calabar, Cross River State.
The incident occurred during a routine stop-and-search operation near the Apostolic Sign Board axis, shortly after the Word of Life Church area around Bebobsco junction, according to eyewitness accounts.
Sources at the scene said the Mack truck, reportedly travelling at high speed towards the Zone 6 axis, lost control—allegedly due to brake failure—and rammed into a Sienna bus stationed at the police checkpoint.
The impact forced the bus forward, striking Inspector Edna Matthew, who was knocked to the ground before the truck ran over both of her legs, leaving her with severe injuries.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer in Cross River State, Sunday Eitokpah, described the incident as a serious accident that occurred in the line of duty.
“A speeding Mack truck collided with a Sienna vehicle and also struck a police officer, Inspector Edna Matthew, who sustained multiple injuries and is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital,” he said.
