The Ondo State Police Command has arrested two suspects over separate incidents of maternal and infant deaths in Akure and Emure-Ile, sparking fresh concerns about unsafe childbirth practices in the state.
According to the state police command spokesperson DSP, Abayomi Jimoh, both cases occurred in April under disturbing circumstances.
Abayomi in a statement in Akure said that “In the first incident, reported on the 16th of April, 2026, one Remilekun informed the Police that her brother, Mr. Bawa Lawal, had received information concerning the death of his wife, Mrs. Bawa Blessing, who had gone into labour at a private residence in the Gloryland area, off Ado Road, Akure.
“The house, owned by Elizabeth Aremu, was allegedly being used for deliveries while Aremu posed as a midwife.
Abayomi said the victim developed complications shortly after giving birth and died before she could be taken to a medical facility.
“Detectives who visited the scene found the lifeless body of a newborn baby wrapped in a sack. Aremu was arrested immediately.
“In the second case on April 11, Augustine Kufre reported that his 20-year-old girlfriend, Jenifer Sunday, was taken to a church in Emure-Ile when she went into labour. A prophetess, Blessing Efiong, allegedly handled the delivery.
“The newborn died at the scene, and the mother died on the way to the hospital due to complications. Efiong has also been taken into custody.
Police image maker confirmed that investigations into both cases are ongoing.
” The bodies of the deceased mothers and infants have been deposited at the State Specialist Hospital in Akure and the Federal Medical Centre morgue for preservation and autopsy.
He assured the public that “diligent investigations are ongoing to unravel the circumstances surrounding these tragic incidents and to ensure that all persons found culpable are brought to justice.
Abayomi advised “members of the public to always seek medical care from qualified and licensed healthcare providers, particularly in critical situations such as childbirth and to avoid unregulated facilities or individuals posing as medical practitioners.
He reiterated the commands commitment to ensuring justice and preventing further loss of lives through unsafe medical practices.
The image maker added that the command will continue to take decisive action against all forms of criminality.
