A civil society group under the auspices of Oyo Defender has raised concerns over what it describes as emerging political activity ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Oyo State, urging stakeholders to prioritise transparency and credibility in the selection of candidates.
In a statement signed by its Secretary, Mr. Adedosu Ifaponle, the group cautioned against what it termed premature political positioning, particularly regarding a former Commissioner for Finance, Budget and Planning.
Adedosu emphasised the need for openness and accountability in public life, noting that individuals aspiring to leadership positions should uphold high standards of integrity and public trust.
“At a time when citizens are demanding credible and people-focused leadership, it is important that those seeking public office demonstrate transparency and accountability,” the statement read.
The group stressed that leadership at the gubernatorial level requires both competence and integrity, describing the management of public resources as a responsibility that demands public confidence.
Oyo Defender called on relevant institutions to continue strengthening accountability mechanisms and ensuring that due process is followed in all matters relating to public service. It also urged political parties, civil society organisations, and voters to support candidates who demonstrate commitment to good governance.
According to the group, the 2027 general elections present an opportunity to reinforce trust and accountability in governance.
“The future of Oyo State must be built on integrity,” the statement added.
