NNPC warns public over fake sale of refinery scrap materials

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has cautioned Nigerians against fraudulent claims suggesting that it is selling refinery scrap materials, equipment, or components from its facilities.

In a statement issued on Friday by Andy Odeh, its chief corporate communications officer the company dismissed the reports as false and misleading, stressing that no such sales process is currently ongoing.

The NNPC clarified that it has not issued any requests for bids, tenders, expressions of interest, or approvals for the disposal of scrap materials or refinery equipment from its Port Harcourt, Warri, or Kaduna refineries.

“NNPC Limited has not issued any request for bids, tenders, expressions of interest, or approvals for the sale of scrap materials, refinery components, or any items from the warehouses or inventories of any of its refineries,” the statement said.

The company also revealed that it had received reports of individuals falsely presenting themselves as its agents, allegedly soliciting funds from unsuspecting members of the public under the guise of facilitating such sales.

It warned that these individuals are not authorised representatives and urged the public to disregard all such claims.

According to the company, any legitimate disposal of assets would only be carried out through transparent procedures and officially announced via its recognised communication channels in line with regulatory standards.

“For the avoidance of doubt, NNPC Limited is not conducting, nor has it authorised, any sale of scrap metals, equipment, or refinery components from any of its facilities,” the statement added.

It further encouraged individuals and organisations who encounter such fraudulent activity to report to law enforcement agencies.

The warning comes amid ongoing public scrutiny of Nigeria’s three major refineries—Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna—which have remained largely inactive for years despite repeated rehabilitation efforts.

While concerns persist over their long-term viability, Bayo Ojulari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the NNPC has previously assured that plans are underway to revive the facilities.
