Nairobi woman who got married at 18 shares how a prophetess ruined her young marriage

Irene Njeri Wangui was just 18 when she left Nairobi with her friend and relocated to Nakuru in search of work and a fresh start.

It was there that she met an older man, 15 years her senior, who expressed interest in her and promised stability, love, and a formal union.

How Njeri got married

Having long dreamt of building a family, Irene agreed to move in with him, hopeful that marriage would offer her the life she had envisioned.

Njeri told TUKO Talks that she agreed to his proposal because he promised to pay her dowry and make things official.

However, only weeks into the marriage, she says troubling signs began to emerge, an experience she believed was a “spiritual battle.”

Curious, she researched what was happening and discovered that her husband had previously been married and separated from his first wife, something he had not disclosed.

Pregnancy caused rift in marriage

Her pregnancy marked a turning point. Instead of bringing the couple closer, she says her husband’s behaviour became increasingly erratic.

The situation reached a painful peak when, on the day she delivered their child, he reportedly arrived at the maternity ward in the company of another woman.

“I called him immediately they left the ward together, but he maintained the woman was his friend’s wife,” Njeri recalled. “That is when I knew something was very wrong.”

As tensions grew, Irene learned that her husband was involved in an extramarital affair after stumbling on photos in his phone.

How Njeri met prophetess

Around the same time, their newborn baby fell seriously ill with a condition that doctors struggled to diagnose or treat, leaving the young mother desperate for answers.

While queuing at a hospital, Irene says they were approached by a stranger who suggested an alternative solution.

“She told us her mother could treat the baby,” Njeri recounted, adding that the introduction led them to a prophetess, an encounter she now believes marked the beginning of the end of her marriage.

According to her, the prophetess convinced her husband that the child’s illness was a result of infidelity on Irene’s part.

Njeri’s marriage collapsed

She also told him she was the wrong wife for him, and that she had seen it in a vision. Those claims, Njeri alleges, deeply influenced her husband, who soon distanced himself from her.

Eventually, he abandoned her and their baby, choosing instead to pursue a relationship with another woman whom he had been led to believe was “the right one” for him.

After three years of marriage, she officially walked away, left to rebuild her life from scratch while caring for her child.

For Njeri, what began as a hopeful journey into love and family life became a painful lesson in trust, resilience, and survival.
