“I remember my colleague told me that waiting until I had enough money to move abroad, would mean waiting forever. That’s when I started thinking of universities that allow students to work while studying, and I applied for a master’s program,” he said.

Collins explains why he quit KSh 200k job

By the time Collins was leaving Kenya to move to the US, he was earning KSh 200k monthly; he chose to resign so that he could chase his overseas dreams.

He said he had worked hard in his career in Nairobi and was already climbing the ladder, but deep down, he aspired for more experiences and adventure in his life.

“Many people will tell you that if you are earning such a salary, then you should not relocate. That’s still okay because at times plans do not always fall into place. But for me, the journey was different. I wanted more in life and travelling and moving to the US was part of my desire,” he said.

Collins noted that though he is now a student who works as a graduate research assistant at his university, he has achieved much more than he would have if he had remained in Kenya.

“In my capacity as a student, I have achieved so much, here and back home. I don’t think I would have been able to achieve this with the KSh 200,000 I was earning in Nairobi. So every journey is different, and I would advise anyone seeking to get out of the country to do so,” he added.

Woman frustrated after being denied US visa

Elsewhere, a Kenyan woman recently opened up on the frustrations of US visa denial despite spending over KSh 100k on visa interviews at the US embassy in Nairobi.

She noted that despite having a valid invite from her brother, who is studying at Princeton University, she was still denied the visa three times, with each interview costing her about KSh 25,000.

The Kenyan lady, however, promised to try one more time.
