The Nigerian Air Force has launched an investigation into reports of a suspected accidental airstrike on a weekly market in Jilli, a community located along the Borno State and Yobe State border.
The Chief of Air Staff, Sunday Aneke, ordered an immediate probe, stressing that the service treats reports of civilian casualties with utmost seriousness.
This was disclosed by NAF spokesperson Ehimen Ejodame, who confirmed that a detailed investigation is underway.
According to preliminary reports, at least 56 people, mostly traders, were feared killed, while 14 others sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment in hospital.

Ejodame urged calm, noting that the Air Force has activated its Civilian Harm Accident and Investigation Cell to conduct a fact-finding mission at the scene.
“The Nigerian Air Force has taken note of reports alleging that an airstrike conducted on April 11, 2026, may have affected a local market in Jilli, resulting in civilian casualties,” he said.
He reaffirmed that the protection of civilian lives remains central to the Air Force’s operations, adding that the service will work closely with relevant authorities and community representatives during the investigation.
The NAF also cautioned the public and media against speculation, urging patience while due process is followed.
“The Nigerian Air Force remains committed to professionalism, accountability, and transparency,” Ejodame added, assuring that all verified concerns will be addressed.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over civilian safety in conflict zones in Nigeria’s North-East, as authorities move to establish the facts surrounding the reported strike.
