He would soon grow into a well-known and familiar face in Kenya’s busy public transport sector as a matatu conductor.
Trip that altered Njoroge’s life
Speaking to Itugi TV, he recounted how he spent his days navigating the hectic streets, calling out destinations, collecting fares, and building a modest life for himself, his wife, and their young son.
To those who knew him, he was hardworking, reliable, and far removed from anything resembling criminal activity.

But one routine journey to Naivasha would alter the course of his life forever after his employer, a wealthy investor in the matatu industry, sent him on a trip.
“It was not unusual for us to be sent on errands with the matatu, so I agreed without hesitation, unaware that it would become the turning point of my life,” he recalled.
How Njoroge was arrested
Midway through the journey, their vehicle was stopped by police officers for routine inspection. What followed escalated quickly.
Officers conducted a search of the vehicle, including the boot, where they allegedly discovered an illegal firearm and fake number plates.
“I had no knowledge of the items found, and that there were several others involved in the syndicate,” Njoroge maintained.
He insisted that he was simply an employee obeying his employer’s orders and had no involvement in, or awareness of, any illegal activity connected to the vehicle or its contents.

The case proceeded through the courts, and Njoroge found himself facing the weight of a justice system he says he never imagined being entangled in.
In a ruling that stunned his family and friends, he was sentenced to 14 years in prison. The court held him accountable alongside his colleague, despite his continued claim of innocence.
The verdict was devastating as he left behind a wife struggling to hold the household together and a young son who would miss his father’s presence.
How Njoroge gained freedom
What was once a stable, if modest, family life was suddenly shattered, a development that left Njoroge’s parents disappointed.
A few weeks after he started serving his sentence at Kamiti Maximum Prison, he was introduced to a paralegal who offered to help him file an appeal.
“I was told that there were two possible outcomes; either a sentence reduction of a more punitive ruling,” he shared.
Believing he had a chance, he filed an appeal, insisting that he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, caught in circumstances beyond his control.
