According to a report by Daily Post on Friday, April 24, 2026, former Governor Yahaya Bello has stressed that legislative experience remains a crucial factor that indigenes of Kogi State should carefully consider as political conversations intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.........…
He made the remark at a recent gathering ... organized by Leke Abejide, the lawmaker representing Yagba Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives and chairman of the House Committee on Customs, where political participation and governance matters were discussed.
Bello explained that lawmakers who spend more time in legislative service tend to perform more effectively because they develop stronger familiarity with parliamentary procedures, established institutional relationships, and deeper understanding of how the National Assembly operates.
He noted that such exposure helps them adjust more easily to the demands of lawmaking and governance responsibilities.
He further stated that experienced legislators are often better positioned to make meaningful contributions to policy development, take on leadership roles within committees, and secure developmental initiatives that can positively impact their constituencies.
According to him, continuity in legislative service also helps strengthen representation and ensures sustained engagement with government institutions.
Bello also pointed out that the structure of the National Assembly places significant emphasis on seniority, where accumulated years of service translate into greater influence, improved access to decision-making processes, and stronger capacity to navigate complex legislative procedures.
He added that seasoned lawmakers are generally more effective in managing negotiations and maintaining institutional networks that support legislative progress.
He extended his message to political stakeholders and residents of Mopa-Muro, urging them to consider the importance of timing and patience in political succession.
He maintained that allowing serving representatives to complete their terms could enhance developmental outcomes in their constituencies, while also ensuring continuity in ongoing projects and political stability within the system.
The former governor further noted that such an approach would not deny others future opportunities but would instead create room for stronger representation over time.
He emphasized that political decisions should balance ambition with long-term development goals, especially in constituencies seeking sustained progress through experienced leadership.
“I understand the aspirations of our brothers and sisters in Mopa-Muro.
“It is indeed your turn, but there is wisdom in timing. Allow Abejide to complete a third term and bring greater development to the constituency. After him, the opportunity will come, and it will come stronger,” he stated…....…
