The Abia State chapter of the Labour Party has successfully conducted its State Congress, producing a new leadership team led by Hon. Peter Azubuike as State Chairman and Chuks Akanmadu as State Secretary.
The congress, held on April 25 in Umuahia, was widely described as peaceful, credible, and reflective of internal unity within the party.
Speaking at the event, Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, commended party members for the orderly conduct of the exercise, describing it as the beginning of a new phase of cohesion and collective progress.
“This is the beginning of a new era. Gone are the days when individuals worked at cross purposes. Now, we will all pull together,” the governor stated, assuring the new leadership of his administration’s continued support.
He also emphasized the importance of a smooth transition, noting that the newly elected executives would operate from a befitting party secretariat. Governor Otti further praised the outgoing leadership under Mr. Emmanuel Oti for maintaining party stability during periods of national leadership challenges.
Chairman of the State Congress Committee, Hon. Acho Obioma, disclosed that the exercise followed successful ward and local government congresses, with candidates emerging through consensus across all positions. He described the process as transparent and in line with democratic principles.
Similarly, the State Congress Coordinator, Dr. Chibuzo Okereke, confirmed that the congress adhered to relevant legal frameworks, including the Constitution and Electoral Act, adding that it forms part of preparations for the party’s forthcoming national convention.
In his remarks, the newly elected chairman, Hon. Peter Azubuike, pledged to strengthen the party’s grassroots presence and position it for victory in the 2027 elections.
“We will mobilize across every part of the state to ensure the party retains power and expands its reach,” he said.
Other key members of the State Working Committee include Ibe Nkeiruka Eucharia (Deputy Chairman), Joy Ngozi Anyanwu (Treasurer), Emenike Iroegbu (Publicity Secretary), and Ben Ikechukwu Oti (Organizing Secretary), among others.
The congress drew prominent stakeholders and party faithful from across Abia State, signaling a renewed commitment to unity and political consolidation ahead of future electoral contests.
