A family court sitting in Ilorin, Kwara State, has dissolved a marriage after a woman, identified as Bashirat Mohammed, told the court that she could no longer continue in the relationship due to her husband’s financial difficulties.
The case was heard at the Area Court in Centre-Igboro, Ilorin, where the applicant approached the court seeking dissolution of her marriage to her husband, Toyin Ajibola.
During the hearing, Bashirat Mohammed informed the court that her decision was based on persistent financial hardship in the home, stating that she desired peace of mind.
She was reported to have told the court:
My husband is poor, grant me divorce so I can have rest of mind.
She maintained that the economic condition of the marriage had made life difficult for her and that she no longer wished to remain in the union.
The husband, Toyin Ajibola, did not oppose his wife’s petition. However, he informed the court that he still had interest in the marriage despite acknowledging financial challenges affecting his ability to provide adequately for the family.
Presiding over the matter, Judge Hammad Ajumonbi ruled in favour of the petitioner and dissolved the marriage.
In his judgment, the court also made provisions relating to the welfare of the children from the union, granting custody to the mother while ordering the father to continue providing financial support for their upkeep and granting him access rights.
The court further instructed the wife to observe the mandatory waiting period (iddah) before she can remarry, in line with Islamic family law procedures.
