Alhaji Murtala Garo’s name has been sent to the Kano State House of Assembly by Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf for consideration and confirmation as Deputy Governor.
Mustapha Muhammad, the governor’s chief press secretary, announced the nomination in a statement on Wednesday.
The statement claims that the nomination was made in compliance with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which gives a governor the authority to choose a deputy governor in the event of a vacancy.
On March 27, 2026, Abdussalam Gwarzo, the former Deputy Governor, resigned voluntarily, leaving the seat open.
According to the governor, extensive talks with important state stakeholders preceded the appointment.
The statement partially stated, “The governor has requested the Assembly to grant the necessary approval for Garo’s nomination following wide consultations with key stakeholders.”
Muhammad characterized the nominee as a seasoned political administrator with more than 20 years of experience in both appointed and elected roles.
According to him, the 48-year-old politician has held positions as his party’s State Organizing Secretary, Special Advisor to the Governor of Kano State, and elected Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area.
Garo has held the positions of Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria in Kano State.
In the general elections of 2023, he was also the All Progressives Congress’s candidate for deputy governor.
The statement continued, The nomination is a component of the administration’s efforts to maintain efficient service delivery in the state and improve governance.
