The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has raised fresh alarm over the readiness of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the 2027 general elections, accusing the electoral body of persistently flouting court orders.
The party warned that such actions could undermine the electoral process, stressing that INEC’s conduct is capable of derailing the 2027 election timetable.
In a statement issued by its National Secretary, Comrade Oginni Olaposi Sunday, the NNPP described the Commission’s actions as “both unbelievable and disturbing,” particularly that it is headed by “a Professor of Law and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.”
The party referenced a recent judgment of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, which directed INEC to, within 72 hours, update its records, recognise the Dr. Agbo Major Gilbert-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the NNPP, and file an affidavit of compliance.
“Three weeks after the judgment, Professor Amupitan and his Commission have yet to comply, without any credible explanation,” the statement said.
According to the party, INEC was duly served with the court order, noting that “proof of service is properly entered in the court record.”
“It therefore stands to reason that INEC must accord the NNPP adequate and equal time, like other political parties, to prepare for and participate in the 2027 elections,” Oginni stated.
He disclosed that the party had commenced contempt proceedings against the Commission, adding that it would “pursue justice and equity to the Supreme Court of Nigeria.”
The NNPP also called for urgent intervention by the Federal Government and critical stakeholders to prevent further complications.
It specifically urged the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi; the Chief Justice of Nigeria; and the President of the Nigerian Bar Association to probe the situation within INEC.
“The judiciary and the courts must be seen to protect and guide their jurisdiction jealously to preserve the integrity and authority of the courts,” the statement added, warning that lawful orders must not be “ignored nor undermined.”
Describing INEC’s current posture as “an embarrassment to the rule of law” and “a clear threat to democracy,” the party joined other concerned Nigerians in calling for the Commission’s leadership to be called to order.
The NNPP further advocated “a comprehensive overhaul of the Commission, particularly its legal department, to restore credibility and safeguard our democracy.”
It also linked the development to the broader governance framework, asserting that “the conduct of the leadership of INEC at the moment is against the spirit and letters of the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr President.”
