According to an interview on TVC, public affairs analyst Yusuf Haroun has expressed the view that the political momentum once associated with Peter Obi may be waning as Nigeria gradually shifts focus toward the 2027 general elections.
Haroun suggested that public enthusiasm, which previously appeared strong and organic during Obi’s earlier political outings, has reduced in visibility.
He argued that the changing mood among voters reflects broader dynamics within the political space, where sustained engagement and structured political backing often determine long-term relevance.
The analyst also pointed to challenges within opposition parties, noting that internal divisions and lack of cohesion could weaken their ability to mount a serious challenge in the next election cycle.
He referenced the struggles within major opposition platforms, including the Peoples Democratic Party, as well as uncertainties surrounding newer alliances, which he believes are yet to demonstrate adequate preparedness.
In contrast, Haroun maintained that the ruling All Progressives Congress currently appears more organized and better positioned for future contests. According to him, the party’s structure and level of readiness give it a significant advantage over its rivals.
He further remarked that shifting public perception could have implications for Obi’s electoral prospects, even in regions where he previously enjoyed strong support.
In his words, “Before, when Peter walks on the street, you see the organic love, but now even if he goes to the airport, nobody even looks at him. I doubt even if he will win in Anambra State if he comes out on a presidential ticket.”
Haroun concluded that unless opposition forces address their internal issues and rebuild voter confidence, the current political trajectory may continue to favour the ruling party heading into 2027.
