Hersheypark in Pennsylvania has abruptly reversed course after bringing in a new mask policy that sparked confusion on social media.
The controversy began Saturday when an X user shared a photo of a sign posted at the chocolate-themed amusement park that read, “Guests under the age of 21 may not wear masks or face coverings.”
The new policy was apparently prompted by a series of fights at the park between masked teenagers.
However, some complained that the new rule would negatively affect those who wear masks to protect against disease or because they are immunocompromised.
Herseypark acknowledged that the sign had caused confusion and said the policy was no longer in place.
“A recent operational update intended to enhance park security led to some confusion, and we made the decision to suspend that update shortly after implementation, pending further review,” a Hershey Entertainment & Resorts spokesperson told The Independent. “Guests may continue to choose to wear a face covering during their visit. We remain focused on providing a safe, comfortable, and welcoming experience for all.”
According to Fox 43, multiple fights involving masked teenagers broke out at the park during its opening day on April 3. Derry Township Police said park security reported several altercations involving groups of teens, resulting in the arrest of two juveniles and one adult. Other individuals involved were ejected from the park. Authorities noted they are not aware of any injuries connected to the incidents.
Months after those incidents, the sign banning masks was spotted and shared online.
When the poster went viral, one X user wrote, “So if you’re COVID-informed and/or immune-compromised, you may want to find another amusement park for your family vacation,” as users quickly began debating whether the policy unfairly targeted guests who wear masks for health reasons.
“Absolutely despicable. How are people trying to protect themselves able to do so?” one person responded.
Another wrote, “This is an extremely discriminatory and ableist policy.”
Others argued that the park is “a private property” where “they can have any rules they want.”
“Have people lost common sense?” another person asked. “This is clearly talking about ski masks… that have been a huge problem with teens in these parks. It’s not about COVID masks.… Come on, people.”

Alongside the mask policy reversal, the company also announced an updated customer re-entry process designed to improve security. Under the new system, guests who exit the park and plan to return the same day must have their photo taken at departure.
The image will then be automatically verified upon re-entry to confirm ticket use.
“This process helps ensure that admission is used only by the original ticket holder for same-day re-entry,” Hershey Entertainment told Fox 43 this week. “The system is designed for verification purposes only, and guest information is handled in accordance with our privacy and security practices.”
