Cyprus is hosting European Union leaders and officials for an important summit on April 23. The island is hosting this kind of summit for the first time, the Greek newspaper Kathimerini noted. This is an important summit at a crucial time.
One reason it is important is that the Middle East is on edge over US-Iran tensions and the ceasefire in Lebanon. In addition, the summit will discuss Ukraine and other key issues. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to attend.
Cyprus is close to Israel and Lebanon and has close ties with Israel and Greece. It is a key country in the Eastern Mediterranean. Therefore, having EU officials gather in this area, so close to the Middle East, matters more now. The Middle East is in turmoil. After the US and Israeli strikes on Iran, the Iranians carried out attacks on numerous countries in the region. Pakistan has sought to keep a ceasefire between Iran and the US.
Israeli tensions with Hezbollah continue. On April 23, the IDF said that on April 22, “the IDF struck and eliminated a Hezbollah terrorist who was operating at a launch site of the Hezbollah terrorist organization in the Sejoud area in southern Lebanon, in order to prevent a direct threat to the communities of northern Israel.”
The Greek newspaper Kathimerini noted that “European Union heads of state and government are converging to Cyprus for the Thursday and Friday EU summit, amid an unprecedented mix of challenges for the bloc as the wars in the Middle East and Ukraine rage and the economic outlook appears bleak.”
The report added that Cyprus is hosting the summit as it is holding the six-month presidency of the European Council. Cyprus holds the presidency through the end of June. Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides will welcome attendees arriving in Ayia Napa and making their way to Nicosia.
The Kathimerini report says, “Besides the council members, President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will also arrive in Cyprus to participate in the summit, instead of speaking through a video call, the Cypriot authorities announced Wednesday.”
Macron and Mitsotakis will attend
French President Emmanuel Macron and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis are attending. “Cypriot government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said Macron’s visit reflects how close relations between Cyprus and France have become, especially in recent months,” Kathimerini notes.
A report at RBC Ukraine noted that “European leaders are inclined to support a decision to grant a loan to Ukraine, which had long been blocked by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Following his election defeat on April 12, he will not take part in the meeting in Cyprus.”
The Cyprus-based PhileNews noted that “Thursday’s working dinner centers on geopolitical developments, with particular focus on Article 42(7) of the EU Treaty – the mutual defense clause – and energy security.”
The report added that “Cyprus is pushing for an operational plan – a concrete guide for action under different crisis scenarios. Cyprus was the first member state to invoke the clause, following a drone incident in March.” This was the Iranian-backed drone attack on Cyprus, apparently.
Cyprus Mail added that “Police on Wednesday announced heightened security measures ahead of the informal meeting of EU heads of state, taking place on April 23 and 24, 2026, under Cyprus’ presidency of the Council of the European Union.”
China’s Xinhua also added that the topic of energy prices related to the Iran crisis is “expected to dominate most discussions at the informal meeting of heads of state or governments scheduled for Thursday and Friday in Nicosia, Cyprus, amid a continued blockade of the Strait of Hormuz that transports roughly a fifth of the world’s oil and gas supplies.”
