In a coordinated inter-agency operation, the Federal Operations Unit Zone ‘C’ of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has transferred a cache of intercepted illicit drugs and controlled substances to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Owerri, Imo State.
The handover included consignments of Tramadol, Barcadin Codeine syrup, and substantial quantities of Cannabis Sativa—commonly referred to as Indian hemp—alongside variants such as Ghanaian loud, Scottish loud, and colos valued at N2.6Billion.
The transfer underscores ongoing efforts to strengthen collaboration between enforcement agencies in curbing the circulation of prohibited substances within the region.
Speaking at the handover ceremony,Comptroller of the Zone Bishir Balogun said the growing abuse and illicit circulation of Tramadol, codeine-based syrups, and Cannabis Sativa continue to present significant risks to public health and national security, with young people particularly affected.
When misused, these substances fuel addiction, enable organised criminal activity, and deepen social instability. The Service acknowledges the severity of this challenge and remains resolute in its efforts to confront it at all levels.
Aligned with the Comptroller-General of Customs’ policy focus on consolidation, collaboration, and innovation, recent successes in anti-smuggling operations have been driven by strong teamwork and sustained partnerships with the NDLEA and other sister agencies.
He said: “As the lead authority in drug control and enforcement, the NDLEA plays a pivotal role in ensuring that seized narcotics are effectively removed from unlawful circulation.
“The transfer of these items goes beyond routine procedure; it reflects a coordinated institutional response and a unified determination to combat the proliferation of controlled and illicit drugs. It also serves as a clear warning to those engaged in trafficking that enforcement agencies remain vigilant and uncompromising.
“The commitment and professionalism of officers and personnel involved in these operations are commendable, as is the continued collaboration with the NDLEA and other stakeholders working to safeguard the country.
“Members of the public are encouraged to remain alert and support law enforcement efforts by providing credible and timely information, as collective action remains essential to building a safer and healthier society.”
