Cabo Verde has been making steady strides across multiple sectors in recent years.
This island nation in the central Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of West Africa, saw its GDP growth rise from 5.4% in 2023 to 7.4% in 2024. Tourism remains the major driver of the economy. And with the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicking off in June, Aminata N. Sakho is among those expecting further economic gains.
Cabo Verde is among the African countries that will showcase not just football talent but also tourism potential. The country has performed well in recent editions of the Africa Cup of Nations, culminating in its first-ever qualification for the World Cup finals. Its participation could attract more visitors and spark renewed diaspora interest in the country.
Mrs. Sakho, Managing Director of Ecobank Cabo Verde, understands the importance of diaspora contributions to both the banking sector and the wider economy.
“Our vision is financial integration, and what is very important for us is to see more flows in terms of trade from Cabo Verde to the continent, reflecting Cabo Verde’s role as an African bridge, where diaspora money and trade are shaping the next frontier of its growth,” she said in Forbes Africa (April/May 2026 edition).
She simplifies this position: “We have been connecting the diaspora and Cabo Verde for almost 20 years.”
That connection is not only social, it is deeply economic. The diaspora remains a central source of financial inflows, supporting households, small businesses, and sectors such as real estate, tourism, and entrepreneurship. Over time, these flows have helped position the banking system as a bridge between Cabo Verde and its global community, with remittances increasingly translating into structured investments.
The 2026 World Cup could further strengthen this trend, even as the country transitions from reliance on tourism toward a more diversified economy, focusing on the blue economy, digital services, and renewable energy.
Cabo Verde receives about one million visitors annually, making tourism its primary economic driver. The government is making efforts to diversify into areas such as blue and agrotourism. At the same time, the country is looking more deliberately toward Africa. The same Forbes Africa edition highlights a shift toward strengthening trade links with the continent.
As Sakho notes, trade levels remain relatively limited, but the direction is clear: increased exchange between Cabo Verde and African markets is essential for sustained growth, particularly within the ECOWAS space.
This dual dynamic—diaspora inflows and continental trade—defines Cabo Verde’s current position. One provides steady financial support from abroad; the other represents future expansion. Alongside this, digitalization and financial inclusion initiatives are helping bring more individuals and small businesses into the formal economy, enabling broader participation in economic activity and cross-border trade.
Beyond economics, Cabo Verde is also asserting itself through sport, and the World Cup will offer global visibility that stakeholders like Sakho can leverage within the banking sector. The spillover effects could be significant.
The tournament will take place in the United States, home to a large Cabo Verdean diaspora, further reinforcing the country’s unique link between global communities and national identity. Cabo Verde will play its first match in Atlanta on June 15 against Spain, then face Uruguay in Miami on June 21, before concluding its group stage against Saudi Arabia in Houston on June 26.
Cabo Verde is on the world stage.
Summing up this direction, Sakho reiterates: “Our vision is financial integration, and what is very important for us is to see more flows in terms of trade from Cabo Verde to the continent.”
In practical terms, Cabo Verde is positioning itself as a link between its diaspora and its domestic economy—and between its islands and the wider African market. Showcasing its identity on continental and global stages such as the Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup could further enhance the inflows Sakho envisions.
