Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from the Madrid Masters due to a wrist injury, days after pulling out of the Barcelona Open.
The 22-year-old confirmed the decision on Friday, ruling himself out of the April 17 tournament to focus on recovery ahead of upcoming events.
Alcaraz had already exited the Barcelona Open earlier in the week after aggravating the injury during his opening match.
He said: “Madrid is home, it is one of the most special dates on my calendar, and that is why it pains me so much to not be able to play there for a second successive year.”
He added: “It hurts me especially not being able to be in front of my people, in a tournament that is so special.”
Alcaraz said: “Thank you for the love as always and I hope to see you soon.”
The injury was first noticed during the Monte-Carlo Masters final, where he lost to Jannik Sinner.
Despite initial discomfort, Alcaraz competed in Barcelona and won his opening match against Otto Virtanen before his wrist worsened.
Medical tests later confirmed the injury was more serious than expected, forcing his withdrawal before the second round.
The Spaniard, a two-time Madrid Open champion, has opted to prioritise fitness ahead of the French Open and the Rome Masters.
His absence could impact the ATP rankings race after losing the world number one spot to Sinner following the Monte-Carlo final.
With no points to defend in Barcelona and Madrid, Alcaraz now trails Sinner by nearly 400 points heading into the clay-court swing.
