On June 12, 2025, the Air India Boeing 787 crashed in Ahmedabad a few minutes after take-off, and the Gatwick-bound flight smashed into the hostel of a medical college and erupted into a fireball.
“Then we saw that no one was saved. I have nothing left; I lost my child, my wife. Everything,” Mohammed recalled.

Sadikabanu, 24, and his daughter Fatima, 2, were among the 260 victims who sadly perished in the disaster of 2025. Now the 27-year-old, who was in the UK on his wife’s visa, is set to be deported after four years
Mohammed was on a dependent visa through his wife, who was studying International Business Management at Ulster University in Holborn. With a UK dependant visa, spouses, partners and children of a primary visa holder can live in the UK.

Why can’t Mohammed stay on in UK?
Mohammad’s dependent visa expired seven months after the death of his wife.
“The solicitor told me that I do not fit into the bereaved spouse category, and this is a rare event where a plane crash has killed a resident UK visa holder,” Mohammad said.
Although Mohammad applied to remain in the country on “compassionate and compelling circumstances”, his request was rejected. In a letter sent to his solicitor on Friday, the Home Office said Mohammed had not been granted the right to remain in the country.

The Sun reports that the document said Mohammad has family in India and continues to speak the language, so he would be able to re-integrate into their society.
Another part read that had been granted “immigration bail” until April 22, when he must leave the country, the letter said.
What did people have to say?
Ryan Medcraft:
“I genuinely have a lot of sympathy for him, it’s tragic what happened and I don’t wish it upon anyone, but sympathy doesn’t grant visas or the right to overstay your welcome. The loss of his family isn’t a good enough reason to keep him. Might be crappy to hear but if he isn’t fitting the necessary conditions to grant him a visa or citizenship ect then it’s time for him to go. I’ll still get people jumping down my throat for saying this but no country can be the dumping ground for every charity case on the planet.
Nikki Cherry:
“Poor man, he had such a beautiful little family. I hope he has family back home when he arrives to comfort him through this. Some of these comments are just awful. For what it’s worth, every single Indian man or women I have met are intelligent, hard-working and kind individuals who contribute more to society that can probably be said for some of the morons in this comment section.”

“He will likely receive a significant settlement from the accident, enabling him to retire early and live comfortably in India or anywhere else in the world.”
Jemma Lee:
“I feel sorry for him. But they were on his wife student visa anyways. Which they would be leaving once she finished her studies (of course except that she found a job gave her a visa). He has family in India. It would be totally better for him to go back to India. At least he has something there.”
June Jenkins:
“I read this yesterday at first I thought he should stay even though he has all his family back in Pakistan (and was here on his wife’s visa) and then he said “I’m a delivery driver and I can earn more money here “ so thats the real reason he wants to stay.”
