Members of the African Democratic Congress, ADC in the diaspora on Sunday took a protest letter to the United Kingdom Parliament, urging the UK government to intervene in what they described as growing threats to Nigeria’s democracy.

The protesters alleged that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration was pushing the country toward a one-party system by muzzling opposition parties and weakening democratic checks.

They also called for the resignation of the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Josh Amupitan, accusing him of bias in the management of the electoral body.

The protest was led by Dr Muhammad Hamisu, Coordinator of Kwankwasiyya Diaspora, and Solomon Aletor, Coordinator of the Obidient Movement in Europe.

According to the group, their appeal to the British lawmakers was aimed at drawing international attention to what they described as the shrinking democratic space in Nigeria.

They insisted that opposition parties must be allowed to operate freely without harassment, intimidation or interference, stressing that a healthy democracy depends on respect for pluralism and political competition.

The protesters urged the UK government and other international partners to support efforts that would protect Nigeria’s democratic institutions and ensure free, fair and credible elections.

Their protest comes amid rising political tension in Nigeria, with opposition politicians increasingly accusing the ruling party of attempting to dominate the political space ahead of future elections.
