A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and aspirant for Abeokuta South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has called on
Nigerians to take greater responsibility in shaping the nation’s future through informed and conscientious voting.
Amuzu, who made the call during a recent engagement with residents of Abeokuta South Federal Constituency, warned that the full benefits of democracy may remain elusive unless credible leaders are elected.
He stated that he remains resolute and is “waxing stronger” ahead of his 2027 race, even as he expressed concern over Nigeria’s slow pace of development when compared with other countries.
Drawing from his experiences overseas, the PDP aspirant lamented the nation’s infrastructural and institutional deficits, which he said pale in comparison to the strides recorded in advanced societies.
“I feel ashamed when I travel out and see the level of development in other countries. Nigerians may not truly enjoy democracy until citizens begin to vote right individuals into office as both a personal and collective responsibility.”
He stressed that sustainable development can only be achieved when citizens elect leaders with proven competence, integrity, and a genuine fear of God, noting that such leadership must also be supported by the people to attain meaningful milestones.
According to him, developed nations have built enduring systems on the foundation of visionary leadership, insisting that Nigeria’s transformation must be driven by its own citizens.
“Let us work together to build a formidable society. I will not disappoint you,” Amuzu assured.
While acknowledging that government often bears the brunt of public criticism, he argued that citizens also share responsibility for poor governance due to their voting patterns.
“We blame the government, but followers are also culpable. Too often, we allow religion, political affiliation, and sentiments to influence our choices instead of putting the right peg in the right hole. As we approach 2027, we must shun the politics of rice and money. I am here to serve, not to make empty promises. Together, we can make a difference.”
The aspirant further decried what he described as a longstanding trend where “the worst of us have ruled the best of us,” attributing it to a deficit of integrity, patriotism, and sincerity among many past leaders.
He queried the continued support for underperforming leaders, despite their failure to meet public expectations.
“Why do we support our oppressors and continue to suffer when we have the power to vote them out?” he asked.
Amuzu also lamented the persistent lack of basic amenities, including electricity, potable water, and good roads, describing them as fundamental responsibilities of government that should not be politicized.
Looking ahead, he urged eligible Nigerians to take advantage of the ongoing voter registration exercise to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and participate actively in the electoral process.
“Things cannot change if we sit back and complain. This is the time to act. Let us seize the opportunity, get our voter cards, and vote massively for the right candidates.”
