A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Toyin Amuzu, has formally declared his intention to contest the House of Representatives seat for Abeokuta South Federal Constituency in the 2027 general elections, pledging to champion policies that will ease hardship and restore dignity to the people.

Amuzu made the declaration at the Abeokuta South local government Secretariat, located at the Ago-Egun area of Abeokuta.

He reaffirmed his commitment to selfless service and distanced himself from what he described as “an assemblage of individuals bent on plundering Ogun State.”

According to him, his decision to join the race was informed by deep concern over the welfare of the people and the urgent need to rebuild public trust in governance.

The PDP stalwart decried the worsening economic situation in the country, blaming the hardship on policies of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“It is a priority to ensure our communities improve and our people are better. I am going to the National Assembly to legislate for the real advancement of my constituents,” he said.

While lamenting the current realities, Amuzu added, “Our people are going through unprecedented hardship. The cost of fuel has risen beyond reach, food prices are skyrocketing daily, and poverty is no longer a statistic but a harsh reality in our homes. Yet, those in power continue to live in comfort while the masses suffer. This must not continue.”

He described the 2027 general elections as a defining moment for Nigerians, urging citizens to remain united and actively participate in the democratic process.

“2027 will not just be another election; it will be a decisive moment — the people versus a system that has failed them. We must rise, get our voter cards, come out en masse to vote and, most importantly, protect our votes to ensure they count. Democracy only works when the will of the people is defended,” he declared.

Outlining his legislative agenda, Amuzu said he would focus on sponsoring bills that address social security, healthcare, education and community safety.

Reflecting on his background, he noted that while his years in private enterprise had been rewarding, the plight of the people compelled him to seek public office.

“If my goal was wealth or power, I could have joined those sharing the nation’s resources among themselves. But this is about service. It is about improving lives and giving our people the representation they truly deserve,” he said.

He also cautioned against vote-buying and monetised politics, describing the trend as dangerous to democratic governance.

“Our collective patrimony must not be sacrificed on the altar of selfish ambition. Sincere leadership is not built on sharing money or rice. Those who invest heavily to secure office often see governance as a business, and the people suffer for it. We must reject ‘cash-and-carry’ politics and choose credibility over compromise,” he stated.

Reaffirming confidence in the PDP, Amuzu acknowledged internal challenges within the party but insisted it remains a strong platform despite efforts by “third columnists” to weaken it.

“The PDP, by God’s grace, is still standing. Its ideology of service remains intact. It is the party of the people, for the people,” he said.

The event was attended by party leaders, including a former Assembly member and PDP Board of Trustees member, Hon. Fasiu Bakene; the State Secretary of the party, Alhaji Semiu Sodipo; and other party faithful.

Observers say Amuzu’s entry into the race introduces a reform-driven narrative into the Abeokuta South contest, as political activities gradually gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
