Labour Party rejects Appeal Court ruling

The Labour Party Nigeria has rejected a recent Appeal Court ruling on its leadership dispute, insisting that the judgement is unacceptable.

The development was disclosed in a statement shared on April 21 2026, on the official page of the party.

According to the statement, the National Chairman of the party Julius Abure, faulted the court’s decision, arguing that it contradicts established legal principles regarding the internal affairs of political parties.

Abure maintained that issues relating to party leadership remain internal matters, adding that previous court decisions have upheld that position.

“We have seen what transpired today at the Appeal Court, the judgement is not acceptable to all of us,” he said.

He also dismissed claims that the tenure of the current leadership had expired, stating that a valid convention held in March 2024 in Nnewi still subsists.

The party chairman further described the meeting in Umuahia, which led to the emergence of a caretaker committee, as unconstitutional.

He insisted that only recognised party leadership has the authority to convene such meetings.

Abure, however, confirmed that the party has commenced legal steps to challenge the ruling.

“We are going to appeal that decision, we will move to the Supreme Court,” he added.
