President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Rotimi Iseoluwa Oyedepo, SAN, as the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in the Federal Ministry of Justice.
Oyedepo’s appointment follows his transfer of service from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to the mainstream Federal Civil Service. The approval was conveyed in a letter dated December 23, signed by Omolabake Mafe on behalf of the Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission, which stated that the appointment was made in the public interest.
He will assume office following the retirement of the outgoing Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr Abubakar Babadoko, who is expected to complete the mandatory eight-year tenure as a director on December 31, 2025.
Oyedepo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, is a 2007 law graduate of the University of Ilorin and was called to the Bar in 2008 after attending the Nigerian Law School. He brings over 15 years of prosecutorial experience from his time at the EFCC, where he specialised in handling complex economic and financial crime cases.
During his tenure at the anti-graft agency, Oyedepo served in various capacities, including as Head of the Monitoring Unit. He was also part of the Federal Government’s legal team in the high-profile arbitration case involving Process and Industrial Development (P&ID) against the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
According to the federal government, his appointment is expected to strengthen public prosecutions by reducing reliance on external legal counsel and ensuring greater coherence and consistency in the government’s prosecution and legal strategy.
