President Bola Tinubu has spoken by telephone with Nigerian-British former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua following a tragic road accident in Ogun State that left the boxer injured and claimed the lives of two of his associates.
A statement issued on Monday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, said Tinubu conveyed his condolences to Joshua over the deaths and wished him a speedy recovery.
The President was informed that the boxer is receiving medical care in hospital.
Tinubu also spoke with Joshua’s mother, offering prayers and words of comfort.
She reportedly expressed appreciation for the President’s outreach.
In addition, the President contacted Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, who was said to be at the hospital with Joshua and his family. The governor assured Tinubu that all necessary steps were being taken to ensure the boxer receives the best possible medical attention.
Earlier, Tinubu, who is currently abroad, had expressed sympathy in a statement posted on X, describing Joshua as a source of national pride and urging unity and compassion in difficult moments.
He prayed for Joshua’s strength and recovery and for the repose of the souls of those who died in the accident, which occurred on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
