Bandits have released the Ojibara of Bayagan Ile, Alhaji Kamilu Salami, after holding him captive for 25 days, sparking celebrations across the community. The monarch was abducted on his farm on a fateful Saturday morning and was finally freed on Tuesday night.
Residents of Bayagan Ile erupted in joy upon learning of his safe return. The palace was flooded with jubilant community members eager to see their monarch and congratulate him and his family.
Confirming the development, community spokesperson Ayinla Lawal told Vanguard on Wednesday that the monarch’s release came after a substantial ransom was paid in two installments, raised entirely by the community.
“I’m happy to inform you that our monarch has returned safely,” Ayinla said. “Our elders and community members requested that we do not disclose the amount, but it was huge. The local and state governments did not assist us during this ordeal. Only the community contributed, and it was a difficult process, which is why it took time. Above all, we thank Almighty God for his safe return, and we also thank the media and everyone in the community for their support.”
Ayinla expressed confidence that the bandits would not strike the community again, noting that additional vigilantes and hunters have been recruited to strengthen security. He also predicted that residents who had fled would begin returning home.
Attempts to speak with the monarch were unsuccessful, as he was said to be taking an extended rest. “You can’t talk to Kabiesi until after some days,” said Aliyu, who was attending to the monarch at the hospital in Ilorin.
