The Gombe State Police Command on Wednesday arrested two suspects for alleged unlawful possession of a firearm, a development authorities described as a major step in ongoing efforts to enhance public safety across the state.
The suspects, identified as Samuel Sunday, 22, of Layin Hashido Quarters, and Enosh Yakubu, 24, of Water Board Quarters, were apprehended on the night of April 7, 2026, during a routine patrol by operatives attached to Operation Hattara.
According to a statement issued by the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, the suspects were intercepted around Orji Quarters near Jiemere Hotel after officers observed them behaving suspiciously.
“Operatives on patrol noticed the two individuals moving in a suspicious manner and promptly intercepted them for questioning,” Abdullahi said.
He disclosed that during preliminary interrogation, one of the suspects attempted to dispose of an object in a bid to evade detection.
“The item was quickly recovered and identified as an FIE Corp Miami pistol with breach number D847339, loaded with one round of 9mm live ammunition,” he added.
The police spokesperson confirmed that the suspects are currently in custody, while the recovered firearm and ammunition have been secured as exhibits.
“Investigation is ongoing to ascertain the source of the firearm and determine the extent of the suspects’ involvement in any criminal activities,” Abdullahi stated.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Umar Chuso, commended the operatives for their vigilance and professionalism, noting that their swift action helped avert a potential threat.
“The timely intervention of our officers underscores the Command’s commitment to proactive policing and public safety,” the CP said.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and continue to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible and timely information.
The command assured all that further updates would be made available as investigations progress.
NGGOSSIPS Online reports that this development comes after Gombe State Police Command, on Thursday, announced the continuation of restrictions on motorcycle movements within the Gombe metropolis, maintaining the existing curfew from 7 pm to 6 am daily.
The command said the enforcement of the directive would resume on Friday, April 3, 2026, following a comprehensive review of the security situation in collaboration with other security agencies and key stakeholders.
