The devastated man, although grateful to be alive, said the incident left him paralysed, unable to pursue his dreams, and unable to provide for his family.

Where was Maina Kariuki shot?

Speaking in a report by Citizen TV, Kariuki shared that on that fateful day, he was on his way home from hustling at the industrial area when he got caught in the chaos.

“I was trying to run and get away from the violence when suddenly I found myself on the ground. I had already been shot in the head. I cannot remember the exact officer who shot me, but I know he was from Kayole Police Station,” said Kariuki.

His family found him and rushed him to the hospital, but upon examination and scans, the surgeons decided not to remove the bullet from his head.

He explained that removing the bullet posed a greater risk to his health than leaving it lodged inside. Kariuki was forced to adapt to a new life, paralysed, relying on his mother for almost everything.

“I can even go for two weeks without bathing because I need help to do that. I cannot work, which means my mother has to provide everything I need,” he shared.

Anna Minanyiri spoke painfully about her son’s situation, wondering what would happen to him if she were to die.

“Sometimes I ask God that if I am to die soon, He should first take my son so I can follow him,” she said through tears.

Anna explained that she originally comes from Narok but fled after her land was taken from her.

As a result, they had no home of their own and lived in a single room in Kayole, which serves as their bedroom, kitchen, and living space.

Kariuki appealed for justice and questioned why victims of the 2017 protests were prioritised while victims of police brutality from 2007 are largely forgotten.

“They should come take their bullet. Let them start compensating us. I have lived with this for 18 years and no one is bothered,” he said.
