The Federal High Court (FHC) in Abuja on Tuesday commenced the mass trial of suspected terrorists facing terrorism-related charges.
The trial, which is usually conducted at Kainji in Niger State, was relocated to the Abuja FHC due to the court’s Easter vacation schedule.
The vacation began on Tuesday, April 7, and will run until April 13, with normal court proceedings set to resume across all divisions on Tuesday, April 14.
According to reports, all 13 courts at the Abuja FHC are currently handling terrorism-related cases. Some of the presiding judges include Justice Binta Nyako, Justice Emeka Nwite, Justice Musa Liman, and Justice Akpan Ekerete.
In proceedings before Justice Nyako, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, led the Federal Government’s legal team, while Aliyu Abubakar, Director General of the Legal Aid Council, represented 20 of the accused suspected terrorists.
Some of the individuals on Justice Nyako’s cause list include Hamat Modu, Isah Ali, Awal Bello, Shehu Bukar, Alhaji Kulle, Mohammed Abacha Hassan, Aminami Mallum, Tasiu Yakubu, and Abdullahi Ali.
Security around the Abuja FHC was heavily reinforced, with roads leading to the court blocked by armed personnel and police helicopters patrolling the Central Business District.
